Students at Stony Brook University are calling on the state's public university system to continue protecting undocumented immigrants on campus following the presidential election.
It comes as many immigrant advocates are worried that President-elect Donald Trump will put an end to the DREAM program, which allows undocumented immigrant students to receive work permits and protects them from deportation.
Stony Brook does not require applicants to provide their immigration status, but some students are circulating a petition urging the university to formally declare itself a "sanctuary" school. Such schools refuse to cooperate with law enforcement agencies seeking immigration information on their students.
Stony Brook has more than 20,000 students on campus, but does not have an official number of how many are immigrant students.
