Officials of a small Nassau County community say a convenience store's plans to open in their neighborhood may be an inconvenience.
Critics of the plan to bring a 7-Eleven store to Stewart Manor's former Old Manor Fruit Shack say they're concerned about having a store open 24 hours a day -- which is against village code.
Stewart Manor currently requires all businesses to close between midnight and 5 a.m.
Village officials say they haven't been able to get in touch with ownership, but there is no legal requirement for the business owners to meet with them. In fact, they say they didn't even know of the plan to open a 7-Eleven until a few weeks ago, when decals appeared on the property.
"We don't want these large stores coming in and taking over our small little village," said Mayor Michael Onorato.
Renovations are already underway.
