Nassau County police are investigating after a statue of the Virgin Mary was decapitated in Bellmore.
Police believe the incident happened some time between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The heavy statue, displayed outside the Knights of Columbus Hall, was knocked off its pedestal and its head was smashed off.
Knights of Columbus members say this is the fifth time the statue has been vandalized and believe they are being targeted. They also say someone came in and desecrated their nativity scene last Christmas.
Legislator Dave Denenberg says this attack on one faith is an attack on all faiths. "I'm outraged, everyone in Bellmore is outraged," said Denenberg.
Nassau police say more investigation is required before they know whether to label the incident a hate crime.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
