The state wrote out a prescription for change Tuesday for several Long Island hospitals. The Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century recommended dozens of state hospitals close, restructure or merge in order to save money. The commission, however, did not propose that any Long Island hospitals be closed.
The commission recommended that three East End hospitals ? Peconic Medical Center in Riverhead, Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and Southampton Hospital ? be placed under a "single unified governance structure.? The commission also recommended making changes at Mather and St. Charles hospitals in Port Jefferson, as well as Stony Brook University Medical Center.
If the recommendations are approved by the governor and the Legislature, they become law and have to be implemented by the state commissioner of health. Related Information: Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century ? Final Report
