State Senator Mike Balboni (R-Garden City) is giving Nassau County an F for hurricane preparedness the same day an islandwide drill was conducted to determine disaster readiness.
Balboni says the main area of concern is a lack of communication between officials. Deputy County Executive Tim Driscoll named the Nassau Coliseum as the primary shelter during a massive hurricane in an interview with News 12 Long Island Tuesday. The statement was contradicted Wednesday by Emergency Management head Richard Rotanz, who said the Coliseum would only be used as a last resort because its windows could be a danger.
Nassau officials say they are pleased with how the drill turned out and point out that individual families having emergency plans will be the deciding factor in how well the area comes through a hurricane. Balboni says the miscommunications will help officials focus on fixing problems. However, he says he is still concerned that key people involved are not on the same page.
