With the unofficial start to summer a week away, a call is being made to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for a plan to reopen Long Island's beaches.
State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, whose district includes Long Beach and Jones Beach, was joined by other state senators in asking Cuomo to approve a task force that would come up with a statewide plan to safely open beaches.
Kaminsky says without a plan, chaos may ensue.
"Let's say New York City says we're closed, that's not gonna work, everybody is going to flood to one place," says Kaminsky. "It's going to create unsafe conditions without lifeguards and virus breeding grounds on the crowded beaches."
Normally on a warm, sunny day like Thursday, Long Beach's boardwalk would be packed -- but for now it is fenced off.
Most who News 12 spoke with say they hope Long Island beaches will be open as soon as possible.
"It's pretty surreal, I have to say it has been long enough," says Dan Marrow. "In a few weeks I'm hoping - got my fingers crossed, everything will open up."
Kaminsky says he plans on speaking with Cuomo on the beach reopening plans over the coming days.
