State Senator Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick) is calling for increased training for tractor-trailer drivers that transport hazardous materials.
Fuschillo made his comments at a tanker safety hearing held in Farmingdale. The hearing comes in the wake of several serious accidents involving tanker trucks on Long Island. Union official and former tanker driver Demos Demopolous says that while a road test is required for a truck license, a driver must take only a written test to carry hazardous materials. Fuschillo wants that changed.
Officials also discussed ways to make trucks more stable to prevent partially full trucks from tipping over. A federal official says new safety equipment is being studied.
