A part of a Long Island highway could be named in honor of Long Island hero NYPD Detective Steven McDonald.
The State Senate has approved that the parkway from the Belt to the Meadowbrook, known as the Southern State, would be called the "Detective Steven McDonald Memorial Highway." McDonald lived in Malverne.
McDonald was shot in the line of duty and paralyzed in 1986. He spent the next 30 years spreading his message of forgiveness until he died in January.
The State Senate has approved the name change and now needs Assembly approval.
