Treatment and prevention are the focus in the first of 12 statewide meetings run by the Joint Senate Task Force on the heroin epidemic.
Garden City State Sen. Kemp Hannon wants state insurance laws to require companies to cover drug treatments. Bay Shore Sen. Phil Boyle says the heroin epidemic is destroying families and has to be stopped.
"We see the majority of heroin busts here on Long Island are causing tragedy to families," said Boyle.
The forum at the Brentwood campus of Suffolk Community College runs through this afternoon.
