State officials: Low & moderate risk winter high school sports can be played
State high school athletics officials said Monday that some winter sports can prepare for play on Long Island.
Sports given the green light include bowling, swimming, diving, indoor track, gymnastics and skiing - which have been deemed low-to-moderate risk activities.
Basketball, wrestling, hockey and competitive cheerleading remain up in the air due to COVID-19 rising in New York. The state labeled those sports as "high risk" - they are all also played indoors.
Practice for winter sports is scheduled to being Jan. 4.
It's not clear if the directive for high school sports will also apply to club teams and youth sports.
