State lawmakers are expected to vote today on Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D-N.Y.) historic tax reform plan that would create new tax cuts for the middle class and significantly reduce the controversial Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) payroll tax.As News 12 Long Island has reported, Cuomo announced yesterday a new tax plan that would roll back the MTA tax for small businesses with a payroll of less than $1.25 million. Bigger businesses would still have to pay a portion of the tax. "We can tax people right out of this state if we're not careful," the governor said. Under the plan, the MTA money would be made up by raising taxes on New Yorkers who earn more than $1 million a year. Meanwhile, as part of Cuomo's tax reform, the average middle-class family could save up to $400 a year. The tax plan has already been agreed to by Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders. It's expected to pass tonight.
