News 12 Long Island has learned that there is an investigation today into new reports of illegal dumping in Suffolk County.
In the latest News 12/Newsday special report, the Department of Environmental Conservation confirms three sites that are being looked at.
One of the sites includes a vacant lot on Bluepoint Road in Holtsville, another in Bay Shore and a third in Cutchogue.
Brookhaven Town officials tell Newsday that they issued a stop-work order at the Bluepoint lot on Monday. The DEC says it now wants to sample the soil for contamination.
News 12 spoke to local builder Michael Trotta about the dumping, and he said, "It seems to be common, that the people just drive by and think they are going to get away with it because there is garbage going on and the builder is making money or whatever the case is, it is common in the industry."
An anonymous email prompted the investigation, saying concrete, asphalt and wires were illegally dumped throughout Suffolk County.
The county now plans to launch a watch program and a hotline to allow residents to report illegal dumping.
