A state commission released a draft of a plan calling for a tiered tuition system at SUNY schools Monday.
The New York State Commission on Higher Education?s plan prescribes different tuition rates based on course of study throughout the SUNY system.
Commission Chairman Hunter Rawlings says SUNY schools need more revenue in order to be competitive with others across the country. He also says similar programs have been successfully instituted elsewhere.
SUNY Stony Brook President Shirley Strum Kenny says New Yorkers would never go for such a plan and that it could never pass for political reasons.
The commission hopes the New York State Legislature will take a look at the draft when it comes back for the next session, but there is no guarantee that will happen.
The commission will release a final report in June.
