The economic concerns of Long Island residents were on Gov. Eliot Spitzer?s agenda Thursday as he was on the Island for part of his statewide tour.
The governor is making stops around the state to help sell his new budget. The budget proposes an overall 5 percent increase in state aid to Long Island schools, but about a third of the districts would see cuts. Spitzer said he is not singling out Long Island for cuts, but instead blames a $4 billion budget deficit.
Spitzer stopped by a Northport home to hear from residents on issues ranging from high property taxes to the struggle many face to stay on Long Island. The Roethels told Spitzer it will be hard for them to retire and stay on the Island because of the taxes. They said middle class Americans miss out on a lot of incentives that others get.
Spitzer said the key to lowering property taxes is not more state aid but less school spending.
The Roethels said they appreciated the chance to speak with the governor. ?It was nice for the governor to actually hear from people, everyday people, working people, what it's like to struggle to live on Long Island,? Tracey Roethel said.
