The William Floyd School District, already plagued by scandal, is now accused of misspending millions of taxpayer dollars.
A new state audit claims the district has close to $6.5 million in questionable and unauthorized expenses. State Comptroller Alan Hevesi says Superintendent Richard Hawkins overpaid himself $150,000 and used nearly $53,000 to pay for his own education. Hawkins is also accused of increasing the salary of other administrators without school board permission.
Hevesi says he is shocked the school board is not outraged with the findings of the audit. School board President Bob Vecchio says the board has been outraged for three-and-a-half years and has tried to channel that energy into fixing policy and procedure.
