The man who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty but failed to show up for sentencing will remain in custody until his next sentencing date, according to the Nassau SPCA.

As News 12 Long Island has reported, Lee Hughes and two other people pleaded guilty in March in connection with the mutilation of a dog named Miss Harper.

Hughes and his estranged wife admitted to cutting off the dog's ear and part of her leg. The Nassau SPCA says the pit bull was just a few months old when the abuse happened in 2013, and her wounds became infected. News 12 was there when the dog was adopted by a Bellmore family following her recovery.

A warrant was issued for Hughes' arrest after he missed sentencing on July 11.

Hughes faced up to six months behind bars at his original sentencing.
