Southampton to install six more crosswalks for pedestrian safety
The town of Southampton is planning to install six more crosswalks in an effort to keep pedestrians safe on busy roads.
Transportation Director Thomas Neely says the town felt a need to enhance safety for pedestrians, but to “keep traffic moving.”
He says the six crosswalks will also come with flashing lights that will be motion-activated. Five other existing crosswalks will also be upgraded.
The project will require some old trees to be torn down and revamping curbs and sidewalks.
Neely says the project should be completed this fall.
The project is being funded by a state grant totaling $700,000, with the remainder being paid for by the town.
In 2015, Anna H. Pump, of Sag Harbor – a renowned cookbook author and chef – was killed in a crosswalk in Bridgehampton. Her friends hope the crosswalk project will help prevent another tragedy.
