The town of Southampton has established a new program to help rid areas of discarded personal protective equipment.

The Town Litter Crew or TLC goes to areas throughout Southampton to pick up masks, gloves and bottles of hand sanitizer that have been left on the ground.

Southampton Town Director of Public Safety Ryan Murphy says the need for the program was identified by members of the community.

He says as residents see areas that have been littered, they contact local officials and put in complaints through the town's website.

"They let us know that these areas exist and as soon as we become aware of them, we have the crews go right over there and respond to those locations," Murphy says.

Murphy says the crews are out on patrol every day, and have identified a lot of common areas to clean up at this point.

Residents can head to the Town of Southampton's website to make a complaint so crews can take care of the area.
