South County Shores Civic Association holds first Christmas tree lighting in 12 years
Organizers say they wanted to revive the tradition to help the community feel more connected.

A neighborhood in Suffolk County is bringing back a beloved holiday tradition this year.
The South County Shores Civic Association in East Patchogue held a Christmas tree lighting on Friday night, its first in 12 years.
To top it all off, Santa Claus made an appearance, just as he did at past tree lighting celebrations. Organizers say they wanted to revive the tradition to help the community feel more connected.
“We figured that if we brought back the tradition, we could show the children, no matter your age, what you do, or where you are, that we can all come together, enjoy each other’s company, and do something spectacular as a community,” said Tonya Negrone, the president of the South County Shores Civic Association.
For anyone who missed the event, the tree is located at the corner of Southern Boulevard and Maple Drive and will remain lit every night until the day after Christmas.
