Police say a man is under arrest after stealing a vehicle at gunpoint and leading officers on a pursuit.
Police say a woman and her husband were approached in the parking lot of Cirella's Restaurant in Melville by a man with a gun around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. He demanded their vehicle. Officers say the couple gave up their car.
Officers later saw the vehicle, a 2005 BMW X3, in Medford and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver did not comply, and police pursued the vehicle for about 15 minutes.
Police say they used stop sticks on Mill Road to halt the vehicle, forcing the car to stop by blowing out its tires.
Police then arrested Jahmohri Mitchell, 21, of Shirley. He has been charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, criminal use of a firearm, and fleeing police.
Police say at this point they believe the carjacking was random. They say the owner of the car is a cleaner at the restaurant and she was being picked up by her husband at the end of her shift.
Police say they used aviation to track down the suspect.
Mitchell is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
