A baby was found dead at a North Lawrence recycling center Tuesday afternoon, according to an official at Nassau County's Safe Haven program.

According to authorities, the child was discovered at 2 Bay Blvd. at around 2:20 p.m. It was found at Sanitary District 1 within the facility.

That area of the plant is responsible for the collection of refuse and recycling from the communities of Five Towns, Green Acres, Inwood and Valley Stream, according to the Town of Hempstead's website.

A worker at the facility was sorting through recyclables when he discovered the baby inside of a bag.

According to officials at the Safe Haven program in Nassau County, the baby was found with the placenta and umbilical cord still attached.

Officials with Safe Haven, a group that allows mothers to drop off their newborns with no questions asked, will be giving the baby a proper burial once they receive the remains from police.

Authorities did not release information regarding the child's gender.
