Parking meters generate big bucks for local governments, but some residents and business people in the village of Hempstead would like to see them disappear. Hempstead Village Trustee Perry Pettus fields a lot of complaints from residents who tell him feeding the parking meters can be a hassle. Local businessman Bruce Davis would like to see the meters gone too, saying he thinks the area would attract more patrons without the meters. The village has about 3,400 parking meters, which brought in $526,000 last year. Some residents say they feel if the meters are eliminated their taxes might go up. Pettus says parking meters will be the topic of discussion at the next public meeting at Village Hall.
