Some drivers in Nassau say the Long Island Expressway's new HOV lane isn't making their commute any easier.
The final phase of the project, which cost more than $200 million, was opened to drivers in 2005. Drivers say they are finding it difficult to merge into the HOV lane with only two entrance ramps available on the 10-mile stretch.
Some commuters say there should be more access. But Legislator Lisanne Altman (D-Great Neck) thinks the HOV lane should be done away with so drivers can use all four lanes of the LIE. Syosset resident Linda Gilbert agrees. "If all the cars were able to use it, it would open up the traffic," says Gilbert. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) says the HOV lane was designed a certain way because Nassau doesn't have the room Suffolk does. The DOT adds since the lane is fairly new, it doesn't have a problem with looking into possible improvements.
