The only Long Island meeting on proposed Long Island Rail Road fare hikes was held Wednesday at the Huntington Hilton hotel.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority intends to raise fares for the sixth time since 2008. Under the proposal, MTA officials say some one-way LIRR tickets could go up by more than 6 percent, and but weekly and monthly fares will see increases of less than 4 percent.
MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast was in attendance for the board's meeting, but did not comment. He did, however, issue a statement in which he says the increases are "necessary to keep the system running." He added that the MTA is keeping its promise to increase fares as little as possible.
Although there was only one public hearing on Long Island, rail riders can still voice their opinions through video testimony by visiting the Hicksville LIRR station next Tuesday and the Ronkonkoma station next Thursday.
The MTA Board will review all of the public's input before a final proposal is voted on next month. If approved, the hikes would go in effect in mid-March.
