As snow slowly started piling up on the ground Saturday afternoon, towns throughout Long Island kicked preparations into high gear to keep motorists safe on the roads.
Although highway crews hit the roads Saturday evening, drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and to be cautious throughout the weekend.
Some Long Island residents who did not have time to pick up supplies ahead of the snowstorm rushed to the Home Depot in Syosset to pick up bags of rock salt, shovels and scrapers.
The winter weather advisory is in effect until Sunday morning. Freezing rain replaced a steady snowfall, and is expected to last until Sunday.
