For the second time in just a few days, snow is blanketing Long Island. As the steady snowfall comes down, officials are preparing for the morning rush, ensuring that roads are as clear as possible for commuters. In the Town of Islip, salt spreaders are out, working to tackle the snow.
Tom Owens, commissioner of the Islip Department of Public Works, spoke about the importance of laying down salt before the snow accumulates.
“It gives us a head start. Once we get that on the road and we know we’re going to plow, it starts melting and gives us a head start. So it’s a big help," he says.
With the storm expected to hit hardest overnight, officials are focusing their efforts on clearing roads for the Wednesday morning commute.
To help make their job easier, they’re urging residents to park their vehicles off the street.
“Give plows plenty of room to work,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “If you can get your car off the road, park it in your driveway — if you don’t have enough space, park them on the lawn. We don’t care. Then we can do that curb-to-curb cleanup, and it makes it so much easier.”
Meanwhile, customers at Trio Hardware in Plainview are stocking up on ice melt, preparing for the possibility of more winter storms ahead. “It keeps coming and coming,” said one local resident, who was picking up supplies for the season.
