Tuesday?s snowy conditions proved dangerous and slippery for drivers all across Long Island.
Conditions for the afternoon commute worsened as the snow continued to fall into the early evening and then froze. Accidents and spinouts were reported throughout the day in both Nassau and Suffolk counties, delaying traffic.
Between 2 and 3 inches of snow fell during the day, forecasters say. The snow changed to sleet and freezing rain after 8 p.m. and turned to rain shortly after. Heavy rain is predicted for Wednesday.
Drivers were urged to take it slow throughout the evening and because so many did, traffic remained slow for much of the night. Some residents say they?re always amazed that many drivers travel as fast in dangerous road conditions as they would on clear roads.
There were delays on LIRR?s Ronkonkoma branch after a train struck an SUV on the track, leaving commuters stranded for hours. A disabled train in Valley Stream also caused service to be suspended temporarily on the Babylon, Long Beach, Far Rockaway and West Hempstead lines.
