A Smithtown woman lost power during last week's storm but says she's still being charged for it.
The power may be back on at Heather Morrison's home, but she says she was in the dark for five days.
Morrison says it was frustrating looking at her electric usage online. She has a Smart Meter from PSEG Long Island that allows her to see her electric usage in near-real time. And while the power was out, the online system showed a detailed hour-by-hour graph of her electric usage.
"It is nice to be able to watch and see on a daily basis what your consumption was the day before, but considering we had no power for all of those days, I don't know how that's possible," said Morrison.
Morrison is wondering if other customers are having the same billing issue, especially elderly customers who may not be as technically savvy and don't check their usage online.
PSEG Long Island's President Daniel Eichhorn says customers will only pay for electricity when the power is on. In the aftermath of Isaias, the company had a lot of technical problems but Eichhorn says the Smart Meter system worked well. He says 60% of customers have smart meters on the Island and pledged to investigate this issue.
"We will look into the situation that you described, it doesn't sound like something like that would even be possible but we will follow up with it to make sure," said Eichhorn.
"I hope they will investigate and look into this and check everybody's because it might not just be my meter," said Morrison.
