The heavy rainfall this week flooded basements in more than just homes and businesses.
St. Andrew's Cooperative Nursery School in Smithtown took on several feet of water, causing enough damage to put the start of the school year in jeopardy.
Floors had to be ripped up in three basement classrooms and piles of children's toys, books and games were ruined. Some things were able to be salvaged, and school officials tell News 12 while members of the community have donated their time to help fix things up, they're in need of funding to get back on their feet.
The school serves over 60 children between 2- and 4-years-old.
The school director and congregation director say they plan to start school as scheduled on Sept. 9, using the school's first floor classrooms while the basement undergoes repairs.
