A single-engine plane crashed in Bayport Sunday.

Authorities say it happened around 7 p.m. on Third Avenue.

Bayport Fire Chief Robert Fleming said two people were in the plane when it went down. He said the crash created a fire that was at least as high as a telephone pole.

Aviation expert and former FAA investigator Rich Wyeroski said the Piper PA-28-140 suffered engine trouble before careening to the ground. He rushed the scene and two men were inside.

"They were able to speak a little bit, but they were in shock, and they were taken to the hospital," he said.

Wyeroski and Fleming said one neighbor pulled the men from the fire, while another tried to put the fire out with a garden hose. Fleming said the efforts of the good Samaritans saved the victim's lives.

The FAA is on the scene investigating the cause of the crash.

There is no word on the extent of the injuries of the people on the plane.
