There is no yoking around about the rising costs of eggs this year.
According to the Consumer Price Index, egg prices in the U.S. have more than doubled over the past year.
Egg prices have dramatically increased due to the large number of chickens killed due to avian flu, with nearly 58 million birds lost since the start of the year.
The egg crunch is also impacting business at spots such as Family Bagels in Plainview. Owner Neal Schatt says he raised the prices on the menu about 25 cents to cover his rising costs.
Some customers are crying foul."For 30 dozen eggs, we used to pay $20, $25," Schatt said. "Now we're paying $160 a case."
Brian Fishman, who owns Sweet Karma, says he may start using egg substitutes in his baked goods if eggs remain pricey.
