A super-sized sinkhole swallowed up two cars and trapped a Nassau police car for hours Monday.
Port Washington Water Authority officials say a water-main break created the sinkhole and turned part of Cambridge Avenue into a river. Water Authority Superintendent Italo Vacchio says the combination of heavy rain followed by a rapid drop in temperature is to blame for the break.
Vacchio says his crews have been working since 4 a.m. to repair the road and restore water. Port Washington officials told News 12 Long Island that the water flow and the roadway was restored by Monday evening.
There were no reported injuries and only minor damage to the vehicles.
