Michael Scotto is still in the Democratic primary race for Nassau District Attorney after his opponent, acting District Attorney Madeline Singas, dropped her case against him Wednesday.
Singas had alleged that Scotto used fraudulent signatures on his ballet petition.
"They dropped their case today because they realized they couldn't prove fraud -- it was just baseless accusations," Scotto said.
Scotto needed 2,000 signatures to make it to the primary, and he submitted more than 6,000. After a review by the Nassau County Board of Elections, 3,100 signatures were thrown out.
In response, Scotto said that many of the people whose signatures he attained had probably moved and their registration was never changed.
Singas said in a statement, "The fact that over 60% of Mr. Scotto's signatures were fraudulent or invalid proved that the challenge was necessary and justifiable to preserve the integrity of the Democratic process."
Both candidates are now moving forward on the campaign trail.
The Democratic primary elections will be held Sept. 10. The winner will take on Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, the Republican nominee for Nassau district attorney.
