A Suffolk police officer opened fire on a car early Wednesday morning after responding to a call about an attempted theft at a Medford gas station.
Police officers were called to the 76 gas station at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Route 112 around 1 a.m. after a clerk reported that a group of men tried to steal beer.
As the officers were leaving the location, they spotted a vehicle fitting the description that the clerk had provided. Police say they had returned to the scene.
According to a police release, the officers were speaking to the vehicle's occupants when the driver fled - striking one of the officers and a marked police car. After being struck, the officer fired three shots at the vehicle. Police say no one in the car was hit.
The Dodge Charger was later located on Flores Lane in Middle Island. One occupant was questioned, then transported to a hospital for treatment for wounds suffered from broken glass.
The driver, Sheldon Davis, of Coram, was arrested for DWI. Prosecutors say he has nine prior misdemeanor convictions and one previous felony conviction. He is being held on $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. He is due back in court Thursday.
Police say one suspect fled the scene and has not yet been found.
