Many grocery shoppers say they are trying to switch brands or stores to save money amid a rise in food prices.
The cost of groceries has jumped 5.4% in a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Some shoppers tell News 12 they are attempting to shop smart and buying things that will last longer.
"Cause you're spending that money, you don't want to get something that you're not gonna use," says Farmingdale resident Lorraine Schneider.
Others say they are sticking to the items they need like bread and eggs and browsing less around the store for items that could increase their budget
Tobie Stranger, senior editor at Consumer Reports, says beef products are going to be about 25% more than in 2020, pork chops are up 12% and eggs are up 8%.
Stranger suggests substituting more expensive food for meals that could be less expensive.
Consumer experts say it could be another half a year before things start to get better at the grocery store
