The Shinnecock Indian Nation has voted overwhelmingly in favor of building a cannabis growing facility as well as a dispensary.

News 12 Long Island has learned the facility would be located on tribal land in Southampton.

"It's really an economic development and self-government initiative for the tribe, and we think this will be able to help patients who need these products on Long Island," says Shinnecock Nation attorney Kelly Dennis.

Dennis says building the dispensary will create jobs for tribal members and bring much-needed revenue for the reservation.

The facility would serve any person certified in New York state to get medical marijuana, while giving a discount to those who are Native American.

Assemblyman Fred Thiele, an Independent who represents the area, says he has not heard many complaints about the project from his constituents.

"The regulations for medical marjuana are extremely stringent, so from my perspective, if they can meet the state regulations and federal requirement, I certainly respect their right to make that decision," says Thiele.

There are currently two other dispensaries on Long Island - one in Lake Success and one in Riverhead.
