A fire engulfed a Woodbury floral shop and several apartments Sunday afternoon, officials say.
The owner of Jack and Rose Florist, who was inside when the fire broke out, says he is lucky to get out alive.
Jack Rutigliano says he was going over wedding contracts when he heard what sounded like wood crackling in a fireplace.
"It got loud and louder and more continuous as though my backroom was having a temper tantrum," Rutigliano says. "Glass was just shattering and smashing all over the place. We had over a thousand pieces of glass, a thousand vases, that were all being shattered one after another after another, in a millisecond.
The Nassau County fire marshal told News 12 that the fire took two hours to get under control. Firefighters from 25 departments helped to quell the flames.
Even though every flower in his business was burned and he lost all of his tools, he's not planning on letting any of his customers down.
"I've never ever denied a bride and I don't intend to," Rutigliano says.
The owner tells News 12 that seeing the destruction is especially painful because the business was started by his parents, Jack and Rose, in 1948.
He says he is looking for a temporary space to fulfill wedding orders.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the Nassau County fire marshal says it is not suspicious.
