Suffolk probation officers are checking on all of the county?s 400-plus registered sex offenders in anticipation of Halloween.
By law, registered sex offenders are not allowed to decorate their homes, answer their doors on Halloween or do anything else to entice a child. The probation officers are paying those residents visits to make sure they?re following the rules.
Residents in one Amityville neighborhood say they?re aware a convicted sex offender lives in the area, but say he just keeps to himself and doesn?t decorate. Parents say they just stay alert to the situation.
Laura Ahearn, of Parents for Megan's Law, says intense supervision acts as a deterrent for sex offenders.
