An update to a story News 12 first reported last Wednesday.
The Port Jefferson Village Mayor Lauren Sheprow confirming in a letter to the community that "several" Code Enforcement Officers have resigned.
The letter comes just a few days after News 12 first reported that the Village Board voted to suspend the carrying of firearms for any and all Village employees.
Lauren Sheprow and the Board of Trustees also telling Village residents "SCPD (Suffolk County Police Department) has agreed to increase patrols and tours in Port Jefferson..."
You can read the letter from Mayor Sheprow and the Board of Trustees here:
The letter was sent to the community on the same day that News 12 shared information from a source saying that Code Enforcement Chief Andrew Owen submitted his letter of resignation to the Village on Friday.
News 12 spoke with two Code Enforcement Officers last Wednesday who said they have personal carry permits and feel safer being armed on the job.
Sheprow also told News 12 that the board had been considering barring employees from carrying weapons for more than a year.
She says the decision was made to do so back on October 25, following an incident where a
gun was left in a public restroom in Village Hall by a Code Enforcement Officer.
