The Town of Brookhaven announced plans to purchase 120 acres for open space in the Carmans River watershed Tuesday.

The $12 million land purchase is considered critical to preserving the land from being developed, which could ultimately compromise the Carmans River.

"This untouched swath of Long Island woodland in Yaphank will stand forever preserved," said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.

Yaphank civic group members say they have been trying to preserve the property since the 1970s.

"And now 40 years later, it hasn't been developed. It has been acquired. It's a glorious day for Yaphank," said Linda Peterson, of Yaphank Civic Association.

The Town of Brookhaven says it's also working on a land acquisition program along the Forge River, which is considered in desperate need of environmental help.
