Days after a Garden City man allegedly killed his family inside a Baltimore hotel room, extended family members and friends are left trying to understand why it happened and struggling to move forward.
Baltimore police say William Parente beat and suffocated his wife Betty and then his 11-year-old daughter Catherine. They say he killed 19-year-old daughter Stephanie hours later on Sunday. Parente laid out their bodies on the bed, cops say, then took his own life in the hotel room bathroom.
Police are still unsure of William Parente?s motive, but there are allegations he may have been involved in questionable financial dealings. Meanwhile, friends and neighbors say they?re still in shock and can?t figure out what to make of it. They, and even those who didn?t know the family, are paying tribute to the Parentes by laying flowers and cards outside the Garden City home.
?I just had felt compelled to come here and give flowers because I just can't get the picture out of my mind ? her, the girls and the wonderful family,? says neighbor Maria Arianas.
A cousin of Betty Parente?s tells News 12 Long Island he is making the funeral arrangements for the family. Relatives were at the family?s Garden City home Thursday to pick out clothes the Parentes will wear at the funeral. The funeral is set for Tuesday, April 28 at St. Joseph's Church.
Cops won't say specifically if financial problems are to blame. However, the FBI has begun investigating Parente's business dealings after the state attorney general?s office received a complaint from an investor who couldn't get his money back.
