A Seaford woman's battle with cancer is serving as a reminder to Long Islanders to use sunscreen.
Linda Dunckley was treated at Northwell Health in New Hyde Park with hyperbaric oxygen therapy after other treatments failed. She was diagnosed with skin cancer last year and ended up with a 2 1/2 inch hole on her face.
Dunckley, 66, had surgery then chemo and a skin graft, but was still left with a hole on her cheek that wouldn't heal. She then had about two dozen treatments in a hyperbaric chamber and says she is now doing much better.
Dr. Alisha Oropallo says the treatment is important because in those cases that are difficult to heal it can increase the oxygen you breathe and saturate your blood vessels. She says you're healing not just from the outside in, but you're also healing from the inside out.
Dunckley, who is a nurse, says she doesn't remember using a lot of sunscreen as a kid. She says the damage you get as a kid is the damage you see today.
Dunckley and doctors at Northwell Health say make sure to use sunscreen and apply it often.
