A high school senior from Sands Point is teaching women in Ghana to become self-sufficient.
Schreiber High School senior Nicole Forman, 17, created the not-for-profit organization Teaching Women to Fish, based around the proverb, "If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day; if you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime."
At 12, Forman became interested in humanitarian aid to impoverished countries. She convinced her family to allow her to travel to a remote farming village in Ghana.
"If you go into a village, give them a container of rice, in a few months they are going to need more," she says. "You've done nothing to help their long-term sustainability."
She says women should be taught skills that will increase their independence. Forman decided to encourage the residents to harvest oil palm samplings, a type of tree that is indigenous to the region.
"When you cook the seeds, it can be used in oil, beauty products," she says. "It's shipped to America. So there's a big market here for it, too."
