Smithtown school officials are apologizing for confusion over what was thought to be a COVID-19 case.
A letter sent to parents said an Accompsett Middle School student was positive for the coronavirus.
But now school officials say the student was wrongfully identified as a positive case.
The district has blamed the mixup on an "input error." The student has since been allowed to return to school.
