Police: Mother, baby killed in Yaphank crash

Police say the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on the Long Island Expressway service road near Exit 65 when the minibus was attempting to make a left turn and was struck by a Nissan Sentra.

A mother and her 1-year-old daughter were killed in a crash involving a minibus Thursday in Yaphank, police say.
Police say the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on the Long Island Expressway service road near Exit 66 when the minibus was attempting to make a left turn and was struck by a Nissan Sentra. The bus
The 31-year-old woman driving the Nissan, Jacklyn Smoljan, was dead at the scene, according to officials.
Rescuers tried desperately to save the baby who was restrained in her car seat.
"When the officer arrived at the scene, the baby was moved out of the vehicle by a pedestrian," says Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison. "The officer performed CPR and EMS arrived."
Authorities say her daughter, Joelaya Smoljan-Davenport, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The two occupants of the minibus were moved to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
News 12 spoke briefly with a relative of the victims. She was too distraught to be interviewed, only saying that she lost her daughter and granddaughter on Thursday.
Nearby residents were also saddened to hear about the accident.
"There's no words - somebody to go so young and the mom," says Tom Jones, of Medford. "My condolences to their family."
There is no word on what caused the crash.
