Parents and school officials in Port Washington debated Tuesday night over whether the district should face deep budget cuts or pierce the state tax cap.
The school board outlined two budget plans at the meeting. One calls for an override of the tax levy cap, but would preserve programs and allow for the hiring of additional staff. The other would stay within the cap, but lead to cuts in various programs.
Board members say this year's 0.85 percent cap puts a tight squeeze on the budget to accommodate growing enrollment.
The Port Washington School District is one of many across Long Island and the state expected to face tough financial decisions because the growth in school property taxes is capped near zero.
The school board is expected to hold several more meetings before making a final decision. If the board asks residents to pierce the tax cap, it would require the approval of 60 percent of voters. The school budget vote is scheduled for May 17.
