Some parents in Massapequa told News 12 that they are outraged after a school board member “liked” a social media post that depicted a Parkland, Florida, school shooting survivor in a Hitler Youth uniform.
The meme that Brian Butler liked on Facebook showed the likeness of student David Hogg, a leader of the Never Again movement, in a Nazi uniform and asking the question: “Did you ever imagine the day would come when Americans would march in the streets begging for this government to strip them of their rights?”
“He proceeded to post about how people, adults, are using these youths, and indoctrinating them, and soon we're going to be taking away the guns. Likening it to what happened in the Nazi era,” said parent Karen Higgins. “That, in and of itself, I find to be incredibly offensive.”
On Facebook, Butler responded by saying that the meme he liked depicts the potential for history to repeat itself.
Higgins said the Massapequa School Board called a meeting about the issue on Wednesday but decided not to take any action against him.
“I don't know what the solution is here, but I was just happy that the board called the meeting last night, disavowed themselves of anything said by Mr. Butler, and allowed people to complain about the situation,” she said.
News 12 spoke with Butler, who said he was not making any comments as he is preparing for legal action against numerous parties involved in the situation. He would not say who those parties are.
Butler says he is planning to hold a news conference in the future.
