Sayville's bravest are mourning the loss of a veteran firefighter who's been with the department for nearly six decades. Honorary Captain Wilbur Ritter died of a heart attack while responding to a possible roof collapse at a Main Street drug store Monday. The 78-year-old?s comrades say Ritter was a compassionate man who always tried to do the right thing for his community. Ritter joined the ranks in 1947, commanding respect as a leader and mentor. Ritter's colleagues say his wife passed away about six months ago. Ritter's wake will be held Wednesday and Thursday at Sayville Fire Headquarters. His funeral is Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sayville.
