Firefighters who braved Superstorm Sandy to fight fires and rescue people in flooded homes were honored Friday night in Uniondale.

More than 100 rescue personnel were honored at the annual Badge of Courage Dinner held at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum. Many of them came from the Island Park Fire Department, which was one of the fire departments hit hardest by the 2012 storm.

Chief Anthony D'Esposito, of the Island Park Fire Department, was given the Firefighter Humanitarian Award, which he said was a "humbling honor."

Island Park's fire station was severely damaged by the storm's flooding, which destroyed a lot of equipment and trucks. D'Esposito says a fire station in Roswell, Georgia, donated a pumper truck to them. Despite the loss of equipment, the department worked around the clock to help the community.

Sen. Chuck Schumer attended the dinner and congratulated the first responders, commending them for risking their lives to help the community.

D'Esposito says the department now has new emergency protocols and new equipment that is designed to withstand extreme weather.
