Doctors want everyone to know there is a free lifeline to protect the hearts of student-athletes.

Saint Francis Hospital in Roslyn offers cardiac screenings for student athletes from ninth through senior year.

The program has been running for over a decade.

Doctors say the checks have uncovered abnormalities that required life-saving surgery.

"You invest a lot of time and energy in your child - their whole life to a point where they are in competitive sports," says Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, a Catholic Health cardiologist. "Now they're in that competitive sport. It's like a helmet and pads. Why wouldn't you get something that can potentially save their life with no risk?"
